OFFICIAL TASTING NOTES:

When you walk into the Shnoo downtown (there?s also one in Kirkland, and if you're into teenage girls, hold onto your pants, because there's a music video), you face a board touting the dietary benefits of yogurt. I?m all for pooping clean, but when I walk into a place to buy food, do I really want to think about how my body fights salmonella? No. I don?t.

The downtown Shnoo shares a space with New York Cupcakes. It?s a good business model, I guess, something for everyone, but how can the cupcake gal behind her counter feel when the guy at the yogurt counter gives me his spiel about how his yogurt only has 25 calories per ounce? An entire yogurt has the caloric value one would get licking the cupcake liner. I almost feel bad enough for the cupcake lady to order one of her treats instead.

But I stick with the yogurt, which turns out to be an excellent choice. Both of Shnoo?s flavors (they stick with plain and green tea, like Red Mango does) are deliciously tart and creamy, almost as creamy as Red Mango. The green tea kind has a better aftertaste than Red Mango?s did, and no grittiness to speak of, so I pair it with what turns out to be a very healthy dousing of bright, fresh pomegranate seeds.

Shnoo has a few more creative toppings, like Kashi cereal and honey (mmm, would be so good drizzled over the original flavor with nuts!), but what I?ve got in front of me has a week?s supply of antixodiants, and when the yogurt-cooled pomegranate seeds burst against my teeth like new age Popsicle grenades, I know I?ve chosen the right yogurt.

I spin around, ready to sink into my experience, but there are no chairs. Or tables, or anything. I have two choices: I can walk through downtown Seattle on a 50 degree day with a frozen cup in my hands, or I can set my treat down on one of the sculptures in the public park outside Shnoo and enjoy it with slightly warmer hands. I pick the latter, but the smell of piss drives me back to the sidewalk. I wish I?d brought my mittens.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, here's the definition of shnoo. I'm gonna guess the owners were going with the first option. It was my favorite yogurt so far, but it wasn't that good.
