OK, this post is totally self-serving. I love sherry, and it saddens me that more places don't serve it. And no, having a bottle of Amontillado in the back of the beer cooler for the last two years does not count as having sherry on offer. There should be some Sherry Protective Services organization or something.
Alcohol companies sponsor contests all the time, but this particular contest is so frickin' sweet I have to share (and I wish I could participate...damn you conflict of interest!) Enjoysherry.com and the sherry bodegas at right have a Best Sherry Cocktail 2007 competition going, and you have all summer to prepare (deadline is Sept. 15th, ignore the website). The prize: Dinero and an all expense paid trip to Jerez, Spain. Visit site for details. Sorry, amateurs--this one is for pro tenders only, individual must be attached to a bar or restaurant.
So bartenders, talk to your managers, pick a night for "Research & Development," and advertise your prototypes. And let me know! Let's not let those annoying New Yorkers win everything, OK? Go to www.enjoysherry.com; then click on "cocktail competition," and scroll down and click "contest rules."
