I was circling the airport earlier this afternoon waiting to pick up a friend, and got to listen to the first half of today's episode of "The Conversation," the KUOW afternoon talk show, which was all about the affordability of good, healthy food. For his opening gambit, host Ross Reynolds interviewed Sally Clark about how she was faring on the Food Stamp Challenge, which dares volunteers to eat for a week for $21, the average food stamp budget. After she confessed to sneaking an energy bar from her desk yesterday, the conversation segued onto a number of other issues, such as a comparison of food prices at two grocery stores, one in Queen Anne and the other in Rainier Valley.
It was a great show. Have a listen (if you're reading this after May 24, you can search the program's archives for "The Cost of Food," which is the title of the episode).
