With the way bars spit out new! different! gourmet! drink recipes these days, I always wonder: why do they stock the same crappy mixers? The same tasteless ginger ale on the gun, the same tired cola. Why not have upgrades, the same as cafes charge a little extra for soy?
There are plenty of interesting options on the market. The line of tea sodas from Blue Sky Beverage Company are soft drinks in the literal sense--subtle, all natural, and high fructose corn syrup free. The Pomegranate White is great with gin, and the Peach Mist makes a refreshing, but not too girly, bourbon or darm rum highball. The Imperial Lime soda has a softer lime flavor than limeade and I swear I smell some lemongrass, perfect with vodka. Of course, this robs you of the circuses of ordering a complicated drink, but it also spices it up when you're just in the mood for something simple--but different than the standard G&T.
