Volunteer Park Cafe, which has been renovating the former Cafe Europa space on 17th Ave. E. and Galer for what seems like eons, opens today for breakfast and lunch. Ericka Burke, who was once the executive chef at Carmelita, and Heather Earnhardt, a photographer and longtime industry vet, are serving fresh pastries, panini, and other New American fare.
They're also holding their first event tomorrow night: A wine dinner featuring bottles from Yakima Valley's Chinook Winery. Burke is pairing the 2003 Merlot, for example, with braised oxtail and creamy polenta, and starting the dinner with smoked-trout tartlettes and Chinook's 2003 Chardonnay. All for $75.
