Join: Design Seattle is a new series of events showcasing local furniture and design products, with a focus on sustainable and recycled wares. (Duh, this being greenie Seattle and all.) Featured through Jan. 4 are some truly remarkable furnishings, like Grey Pants Scrap Chairs, made from discarded plywood and cardboard. Sounds uglybut theyre incredibly chic, armless designs. Series coordinator Jamie Newman, from design firm Iacoli & Mcallister, will be displaying seating made from bent Corian and reclaimed pine runners. Also from I&M: sleek metal lighting fixtures that have been anodized orange and yellow. A gorgeous credenza from urbancase has cast-resin doors that look like theyve been splashed with flower petals. I also like the handmade rug that resembles gigantic doily (in a good way) by Ladies and Gentlemen. Newman hopes exhibits like these will help create dialogue and community among independent Seattle designers. I just hope Ill be able to afford one of those chairs. Vermillion Gallery, 1508 11th Ave. 709-9797, www.vermillionseattle.com. Free. 5-10 p.m. SUZIE RUGH
