The Ahmad Jamal Trio, Zs and The Curious Mystery made the list too. Check out briefs, photos and audio samples from all of our recommended shows for August 6 through 12.
[Wednesday, August 6] If you haven't heard this band before, consider Ravi Shankar coupled with a bluegrass band that is fronted by a vocalist-guitarist, Nicolas Gonzalez, who also plays his own homemade instruments, and Shana Cleveland, a woman with a silky Chan Marshall-esque voice who also happens to play guitar, melodica, autoharp and banjo. In a matter of measures, The Curious Mystery traverses oceans and nations with its intoxicating psychedelia, and it’s the kind of trip that doesn’t require a plane ticket or a couple tabs of acid to be completely engrossing. With Teeth Mountain, the Super Vacations. Funhouse, 206 Fifth Ave. N., 374-8400. 9:30 p.m., $5. Listen to Outta California.
[Wednesday, August 6] The Moore's slogan of Historic Theatres, Legendary Performances might not exactly apply to Strange Noize Tour '08, but that doesn't mean Tech N9ne's bizarre brand of Midwest-flavored hardcore rap won't translate into an intense performance. Though his foray into the mainstream was less than successful, the resulting return to the underground saw an even darker, harder T-9. Bottom line: the guy's crazy. With Kottonmouth Kings, Hed Pe, Sen Dog, X-Clan. Moore Theatre, 1932 Second Ave., 443-1744. 7 p.m., $35. Listen to Let’s Go.
