Ben Gibbard's new music video is hilarious. It was directed by radio host/TV writer/all around genius in hilarity Tom Scharpling, so its humor is kind of a given. I like Stereogum's description of the clip--"With this one, [Scharpling] turned Ben Gibbard's general boringness into an asset. Salute."--but Gibbard also deserves big ups for his willingness to poke fun at his whitebread image.
In the clip, Gibbard makes a series of thwarted attempts to toughen up his normal guy image after a consultant, played by Kurt Braunohler, describes him as "a construction paper cutout of what used to be a man" and instructs him that "Bad boys make wampum."
Ben Gibbard plays the Showbox at the Market with Damien Jurado on Friday, November 16. Hope you have tickets, because it's already sold out.
