The CMJ music marathon, the South by South West of the East, is in full swing in NYC. KEXP is there, along with a small contingent of Seattle bands including Hey Marseilles, Fences, Young Evils, and Poor Moon. It's a frenzy of music, media, discussion panels, and parties.
Scrolling the roster of bands performing this year, I can't help but marvel at the evolution of the "band name" and the current meme indie rock is mired in. Who knows, maybe it was Hey Marseilles who made putting the interjection "Hey" in your band name cool--there are at least three others with it in theirs (Hey Anna, Hey Champ, Hey Rosetta!). And while a few bands playing this year still retain the word "wolf" in their name (Sea Wolf, Wolf Ram Heart), a larger percentage have a thing for wildlife in general (Wildcat! Wildcat!, Wild Yaks, Whale Tooth, White Rhino, Vulture Shit).
There's an "Indian" theme (neatly coinciding with the preponderance of headdresses at Sasquatch! this year): Indian Rebound, Indians, Indyn, Wood Indian Burial Ground; a fondness for made up creatures and genitalia: TunaBunny, Vagina Panther, Slothrust (or is that just what happens when sloths stay out in the rain too long?); and a handful of band names nearly impossible to Google: Kings, Velcro, The Rats of New York.
Just gotta say: Well done, CMJ 2012! Here's to WTF 2013.
For any of you bands still struggling to find the "perfect" name, I suggest you take a tip from college football: These dudes still got ya beat, I'd see Beezer Twelve Washingbeard over OK Sweetheart any day.
