Ken Stringfellow's Danzig in the Moonlight Is Wonderfully Liberated

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Ken Stringfellow

Danzig in the Moonlight

Release date: October 16, Spark and Shine Records

On his fourth solo album--eight years since his last, Soft Commands--Posies co-founder and R.E.M./Big Star contributor Ken Stringfellow makes bold, catalog-defying strides. Familiar notes of Posies-styled power pop and sweeping '70's rock a la Big Star ("History Buff") mingle amidst the falsetto notes of Al Green lookalike "Pray," the Frank and Nancy Sinatra vibe of "Doesn't It Remind You Of Something" (a call and response duet with The Head and the Heart's Charity Rose Theilen), and a range of twangy pedal steel, synth effects, and vocal play. Such a "genre buffet" would come off contrived anywhere else, but here each song finds its rightful place in a seasoned pop drama. Stringfellow's excellent lyrical skill, fusing expansive prose to the finely-tuned subtleties of his voice, pushes the effort towards musical poetry.
