We all have playlists for working out, or of our favorite songs used to pump up the crowds at sports games. But how many songs do you know that reference sports themselves? The Olympics kicked off last week in London, and American superstar athletes like Michael Phelps are already cleaning up in sports like swimming, gymnastics, and basketball. In honor of their success, here's the ten best songs about sports. Go team!
10. "In the Water" - Beat Connection
Local dudes Beat Connection extol the virtues of being "in the water."
9. "Table Tennis" - Flying Lotus ft. Laura Darlington
Table tennis, or as I like to call it, ping pong, has been an Olmpic sport since 1988.
8. "Let's Go Swimming" - Arthur Russell
Don't forget to bring a towel!
7. "Volleyball" - Megasapien
Megasapien is a local supergroup of sorts, made up of members of Vendetta Red, Magneto, Pris, and Third Eye Blind.
6. "World in Motion" - New Order
"World in Motion" (originally called "E for England" before that title was nixed as a drug reference) was written for 1990 FIFA World Cup. It's also New Order's only number one single in the UK.
5. "Swimming" - Florence and the Machine
Swimming is the most popular sport to be written about in song, apparently.
4. "Tour de France" - Kraftwerk
Nothing like a little cycling to get you going.
3. "Basketball" - Kurtis Blow
This song, from 1984, extols the virtues of the sport at length. The video is amazing.
2. "Bicycle Race" - Queen
The video for the song features nude women on bikes, and was banned in several countries because of it.
1. "Stars of Track and Field" - Belle & Sebastian
The best song about sports out there. And it's sensitive, too!
