The audience who hit up the Sunset this past Friday night to see local songstress Shannon Stephens' release show for her latest, Pull It Together, got a big surprise when Will Oldham, alias Bonnie Prince Billy, put in an unadvertised appearance. Reverb's Gwendolyn Elliott was there, and she had this to say about Oldham's cameo: "He just kind of emerged right after Shannon started her set and was drinking a PBR by the wall around the corner from the stage. He was wearing a trucker hat, flip-flops, and had a black nail polish pedicure--no joke. Total Oldham cliche. My boyfriend walked by him and almost said, 'Nice Will Oldham costume!' He accompanied Shannon on 'Faces Like Ours' and 'I'll Be Glad' and their harmonies were beautiful. It was a real treat to see him at such a small venue."
If you missed out, fear not. Oldham's about to ship off to Italy for a series of tour dates, but before then, he's out on a Free Puget Sound tour. He spent the weekend in Tenino and Olympia and is probably working his way up north as we speak.
Here's the lowdown on your next three chances to see Bonnie Prince Billy, depending on your geographical circumstances:
Wednesday, June 13, at Sonic Boom Records in Ballard at 7 p.m. (Oldham's also playing on KEXP on Wednesday at 3 p.m.This just in: Sonic Boom's just announced that the in-store scheduled for this Wednesday has been moved to tonight at 7 p.m.: "***In-store has been bumped up to TONIGHT to accommodate Will's Schedule*** (Originally scheduled for Wednesday) We apologize for the change but it was either tonight or cancel due to a change in Will's schedule.
