Formerly the frontwoman of the Seattle pop-rock band People Eating People, local songstress Nouela Johnston's new album, Chants, features dark and moody tracks that highlight her heavily impassioned vocals and lyrics ("You ain't no nice guy," she keens repeatedly on "Joke Part II") and her eloquent, classically-trained piano playing.

The Control Group will release Chants on June 12; in the meantime a couple of tracks have been released in advance, including the heated "Fight":

Nouela's currently on a West Coast tour; she'll be back in Seattle to play a free, all-ages in-store at Sonic Boom Records in Ballard on Sunday, June 10 at 4 p.m.
