Crate-diggers and music lovers will once again celebrate their own unofficial holiday this Saturday, better known as Record Store Day, a celebration of the "unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA." Abounding with special releases, in-store performances, and even an ambassador--this year, it's Iggy Pop--RSD has evolved into a phenomenon that keeps the dynamic world of independent retail music immortalized in movies like this and this alive and at our fingertips.
RSD's behemoth list of special releases is exhausting, but there's really no need to look beyond Seattle's great big backyard for new sounds, rare releases, and exciting in-store performances, so we've compiled the following Seattle-centric list of Record Store Day events and promotions to make RSD 2012 a breeze.
Some of these releases may not be available at your favorite store, nor are you guaranteed entry to an in-store show if it's reached capacity. Best bet is to call ahead with any questions, and if there's a band you really want to see, show up early. If we've missed your band's show or release, or left out your store's agenda, send it in and we'll add it to the list!
Happy hunting and Happy Record Store Day!
Special releases by Seattle-based artists, bands, and labels:
Beach House, Lazuli/Equal Mind 7" 45, Sub Pop.
Blitzen Trapper, Hey Joe/Skirts on Fire, 7" 45, Sub Pop.
Death Cab For Cutie, Codes And Keys Remix EP, Barsuk.
Devo, Live in Seattle 1981 2 x LP, Booji Boy Records. RSD says: "This 2 LP set was cut from a cassette recording of DEVO's show in Seattle, WA show in November '81. DEVO archivist Michael Pilmer (aka Devo-Obsesso), found the tape in a shoebox full of cassettes in Bob No 2's home fifteen years ago, which he immediately transferred it to DAT. Afterward it promptly disappeared in the flotsam of Devo history. Here resurrected it stands as a testament to Prince's claim "Devo, you guys are crazy!" Yes, crazy tight and relentless like Caucasian James Browns on marching powder. Enjoy."
Eddie Vedder, Love Boat Captain/Wishlist 7" 45, Monkeywrench Records. RSD says: "Last year Eddie Vedder released his Grammy-nominated solo album Ukelele Songs. Two Pearl Jam favorites were captured on the tour for that record, and they are presented here. Recorded at The Orpheum in Minneapolis."
Horse Feathers, Cynic's New Year LP, Kill Rock Stars.
Lee Hazlewood, The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, & Backsides (1968-71) LP, Light In The Attic Records.
Mike McCready and Star Anna, Keep On/Call Your Girlfriend 7" 45, Monkeywrench. RSD says: "Mike McCready has been collaborating with Star Anna since meeting her at a benefit show in Seattle. The B-side is Star Anna's acoustic cover of Robyn's dance-pop hit."
Now Now/The Lonely Forest, Shifting/Woe Is Me 7" 45, Trans-Records. RSD says: "Hand-picked by label owner Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie), both bands represent his passion for good music!"
Ra Ra Riot/Delicate Steve, Valerie/The Big Ship 7" 45, Barsuk. RSD says: '"Valerie" is a Steve Winwood cover, and "The Big Ship" is a cover of a Brian Eno song."
Shabazz Palaces, Live at KEXP 12", Sub Pop. Sub Pop says: "Recorded in 2011 at KEXP, this was one of the station's most popular live sessions. It is also KEXP's first RSD offering. Limited-edition of 2,000 copies on purple vinyl."
