Tacoma's own Oberhofer made a triumphant return to Washington Thursday night via a show at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard that felt more house party than formal concert.
Having recently released their debut album, Time Capsules II, the up-and-coming fuzz-pop foursome - led by singer/guitarist Brad Oberhofer - tore through a 50-minute set that included the single, "Away Frm U," (the track they debuted on The Late Show with David Letterman last month).
Sporting his signature zebra button-up and powder blue electric guitar, the energetic front man attacked the stage with an excitement and vigor halted only by spontaneous shout outs to his mother.
"Hey guys, my mom's here," the singer explained before starting into "Landline," another track from the album. Later in the set, he leapt from the stage, dancing across a row of chairs before maneuvering the crowd for another moment with his parents.
The show was a homecoming of sorts for the band - and the red-washed walls and dim lighting of the tavern provided the perfect setting for a night that seemed to showcase the intimate crowd of family, friends and former classmates (including local act, Make-up Monsters, who opened the show). But admiration for the Northwest didn't stop there as Oberhofer paused, on several occasions, to discuss the beautiful mountains and friends that served as inspiration for his tunes.
The high point of the night came with the band's encore performance of "Gold" - a rowdy track about love lost that had the whole room grooving to the gritty pop riffs. And as if the moment wasn't special enough, leave it to the bouncy lead singer to end the show by personally thanking - by name - nearly every person in the first two rows.
If you missed last night's show, you can catch the local boys done good at stops in Vancouver, B.C., Bellingham and Tacoma this weekend. They'll also be playing both weekends of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., later this month.

Overheard in the crowd:
(Referring to band member Ben Roth) Is that guy's name Ben? He works at Magoo's (Annex and Eatery in Tacoma, WA). He's my favorite bartender."
