Tacoma's DjSemaj Lands A Track On Raekwon's New Mixtape Unexpected Victory

Leading Tacoma producer DjSemaj got a hit of exposure yesterday when Wu-Tang Clan stalwart Raekwon released his Unexpected Victory mixtape/non-label album/whatever, which includes production from Semaj on the track "Luxury Rap". The beat, like much Semaj product, has old-school appeal: the keyboard woodblock/hi-hat combo and the R&B vocal sample are mainly responsible.

In just under twenty-four hours, the free release (which premiered on DatPiff.com) has been downloaded about 35,000 times. Both the track and the project as a whole make for a solid listen, and for both Rae and Semaj, it's not a bad way to kick off the new year.

Update: I was curious as to how our local man wound up working (albeit on a free release) with one of the foremost MCs of our time, so I contacted Semaj for comment. He explained that the beat was originally worked as a JD Era song. Toronto's JDE is a recent signee to Raekwon's Ice H2O record label, and The Chef liked the track so much, he contracted a verse from XXL 2011 Freshman Fred The Godson, and re-assigned it to his own project. VoilĂ !

Give the track a listen after the jump...
