Tell Me About That Song: Matty Mullins, Vocalist of Metalcore Band Memphis May Fire

A lot went into writing your favorite song--but how much do you really know about it? This week Matty Mullins, vocalist of the five-piece Texas metalcore band Memphis May Fire, delves into writing songs across the country, their best show in London, and fighting through personal struggles.

Song: "The Sinner"

Album: The Hollow

Release Date: April 26

When it was written: "The Sinner" was written in August of 2010. The writing process for The Hollow started shortly after we finished recording our Between the Lies EP.

Where it was written: I wrote the majority of the lyrics in Dallas while the rest of the band was in Orlando tracking the Instrumentals. Once I finished, I flew to Orlando and met up with the band at Chango Studios to track the vocals and finish up the record.

Favorite line in the song: My favorite line is "I know could never run far enough to escape your love, so why do I keep running?" This line really sums up the meaning behind the song.

Which part was the hardest to come up with? During the writing process I try my best to not force anything. Mine and Kellen's writing styles work really well together so if i'm not feeling a part right off the bat, I just move on and come back to it later. I believe that that if a part is "hard to come up with," the listener will be able to pick up on that.

If you could go back and change anything, what would it be? To be honest, The Hollow is the first record we've done that we are 100 percent happy with. Even now when I jam it, I can't imagine changing anything about any of the songs.

Odd fact about song: "The Sinner" is the only song on The Hollow that I wrote about myself. Although many people can relate to the lyrics, this song describes the most important part of my life.

What was your inspiration for writing the song? I wanted to write a song about myself in the purest and rawest form possible. I think it's really important for bands to be transparent with their fans so they know and understand that we are just regular people that deal with and struggle with the same issues that they do on a daily basis.

When was your favorite time performing it live? We've had so many amazing shows since releasing The Hollow, so it's really hard to pinpoint one show, but I will say our crowd in London, England was incredibly responsive. They sang so loud it was hard for me to hear myself. I'll never forget that show.

What is the meaning behind the song? "The Sinner" is about the constant struggle of being a devout follower of Christ. As believers, it's important to realize that everyone struggles with different things and no one is perfect, and without repentance, we can so easily become consumed by sin. I'll be the first person to admit that I am nowhere near perfect and God's unconditional love and forgiveness is the reason I am alive today.

Memphis May Fire will be performing on Oct. 27 at El Corazon with Alesana, A Skylit Drive, Sleeping With Sirens, Attila, and Serianna
