In this week's paper, I chat with Avett Brothers bassist Bob Crawford about the music he's been spinning this summer. Crawford explained that he's been listening to a lot of John Hartford, a banjo/fiddle player that received the same kind of chilly reception from traditional bluegrass fans that the Avett Brothers have experienced, boos and all.

Here's what else has been running through Crawford's space this summer:

The Freight Hoppers: They have an album called Waiting on the Gravy Train. I used to listen to them in the late '90s. I just rediscovered that album. That's a really wonderful album that, if you like old-time music, you'll love.

The Grateful Dead: I've been running a lot, (and) I got Sirius XM radio.I used to love the Grateful Dead. My little running ritual is I'll put on the Sirius Grateful Dead channel and I'll go jog four miles. I find that to be a nice kind of release.
