Fiona Apple's rumored to have a new album out this year (can you believe it's been six years since Extraordinary Machine?). There aren't many further details beyond that rumor, but in the meantime Apple's contribution to that much-buzzed-about Buddy Holly tribute, Rave On: Buddy Holly, has hit the web via 107.7 The End, who premiered the track on "What's Next" last week. (The tribute also includes covers by Florence & the Machine, the Black Keys, and Modest Mouse's version of "That'll Be the Day" that we shared last month).
Apple's cover of Holly's 1957 classic, "Everyday," which features her frequent collaborator Jon Brion, is gorgeous in its understatement. It's quiet and shadowy, composed of easy guitar, some sweet xylophone melodies, and of course Apple's amazingly expressive vocals.
Rave On: Buddy Holly will be released on June 28--check out this preview. Florence Welch's "Not Fade Away" sounds stunning; you'll also see snippets of Paul McCartney's, My Morning Jacket's, Julian Casablancas', and the Black Keys' contributions.
