Erstwhile Ballard music darling Jesse Sykes--who's been living in Iowa with her new beau of late--is going the self-release route for her forthcoming record, Marble Son. As a colleague of mine put it, Marble Son sounds like Sykes backed by the Allman Brothers. It's a much more open, impressionistic record than we heard on the three LPs Sykes released through Seattle's Barsuk. It's also her best, smartest record yet.
Sykes is releasing Marble Son on her own label, Station Grey Records, on August 2, and she'll support it with a gig atShowbox at the Market on August 4. In the meantime, Sykes is opening for Lucinda Williams at the Zoo on June 27. If ever there were a record that lent itself to a second life onstage, Marble Son is it. Mark these dates on your calendars, folks.
