Gibbard Says The Postal Service Has "Songs We've Been Working On," But Don't Hold Your Breath for the Next Record

During my preshow chat with Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard yesterday, I worked in the obligatory question about the future of The Postal Service, his wildly successful side project with producer Jimmy Tamborello.

SW: Are you gonna do another record?

Gibbard: Maybe someday. It's never been an active project. Our attitude hasn't changed about it since we first made the record, that it was meant to be a side project, that it was a fun thing to do. Never say never, but I don't think anybody should be holding their breath that you know, they're going to get a new record in 2012 or something like that.

Even though there would be guaranteed album sales right out the gate?

I don't want to do it for that reason. I want to do it because we have some really good songs and we're exciting about working together.

We have songs here and there we've been working on. But, you know, until it seems like the right time to do it, we won't. That's not to say that that day won't come. I don't want to close the book on it, you know?
