Shabazz Palaces' "Swerve" Runs Counterpoint to Seattle's Smooth Rap (It's Also Free)

June looks to be a big month for Seattle hip-hop, featuring a pair of releases from two of the region's heavy hitters: Blue Scholars' Cinemetropolis and Shabazz Palaces heavily hyped, highly anticipated debut LP Black Up. The latter drops May 28, and a free download of the verbosely titled closing track, "Swerve... The Reeping of All That Is Worthwhile (Noir Not Withstanding)," is available on Sub Pop's website.

"Swerve" is another chip in Shabazz Palaces' stack of counterpoint to the smoothly produced grooves of the Scholars and their contemporaries (Macklemore, Fresh Espresso, et al.) that seem to have defined the local hip-hop scene in recent years.

The track is multi-segmented, with a simple, old-school beat that accentuates the Ishmael Butler-led collective's deft wordplay. The bongo-driven coda (which, as fan blog Ishmaelites pointed out, bears a Last Poets influence) is an added bonus.

Shabazz Palaces will play a pair of shows at Neumos June 30 and July 1.
