Surfing the interwebs yesterday, I stumbled across this handy infographic by Pop Chart Lab* which reduces pop stars to their haircuts. Identifying Cat Stevens by his unruly mop is fun and all, but it got me thinking about some of the archetypal styles in rock and even their evolution. Did hair metal spawn emo, for instance? We may never know, but here are ten iconic styles preferred by musicians through the ages.
1. The Pompadour
Style icon: Elvis
Also sported by: Morrissey, Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer, Adam Lambert, Janelle Monáe
Gotta love the vintage Moz.
There's something delectable about the slicked-back, greasy look of a properly constructed pompadour.
2. The Afro
Style icon: Jimi Hendrix, the Jackson 5
Also sported by: Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spaulding, Phil Spector
Secretly the style I am most jealous of.
Style icon: Bob Marley
Also sported by: Adam Duritz, Lil Wayne, Zach de la Rocha, Crystal Bowersox
Marley gets a pass, but the balding-with-dreads look of Counting Crows' Duritz is tragic.
Style icon: Sinéad O'Connor
Also sported by: Britney Spears, Solange Knowles, Kanye West
Sinéad rocked it, while in Britney's case it was indicative of troubled times.
5. Ridiculous '80s hair
Style icon: Mike Score of A Flock of Seagulls
Also sported by: Jared Leto, Robert Smith, Cyndi Lauper, Adam Ant
I can't unsee it.
Judging from this pic of Jared Leto; tragic '80s 'dos can't be confined to just one decade.
6. The Beehive
Style icon: the Ronettes
Also sported by: Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Amy Winehouse
The higher the hair, the closer to God?
7. The Teen Idol
Style icon: Justin Bieber
Also sported by: the Monkees, early Beatles
There's just something irresistible about swishy bangs (to tween girls, at least).
8. Scene hair
Style icons: Panic at the Disco, Tokio Hotel
Also sported by: Paramore, pretty much all emo bands
Tokio Hotel. Please note that the one who looks like Sonic the Hedgehog and the one sporting the hat/dreads combo are twins.
The amount of Aquanet these guys must go through boggles the mind.
9. Hair metal (the whole genre) Style icon:
Also sported by: Nitro, Cinderella, that guy at the bar who still thinks it's 1988
Hair metal has always confused me--that's supposed to be sexy?
10. Punk hair Style icons:
Style icons:the Sex Pistols
Also sported by: Punk bands through the ages from Siouxsie Sioux to Green Day.
