Though last year's Letters was a notable release in itself, local electro-pop outfit Viper Creek Club made a name for themselves with their way of remixing local hip-hop. Taking on Fresh Espresso, Sol, Wizdom, and Grynch, the duo of Mat Wisner and Brandon Jensen turned to a harder edge while connecting indie rock and indie rap. Now Wisner's taken on the work of 17-year-old R&B songstress JusMoni, opting for the last track from her debut record Ready for Life: "I Need You"--a letter of love to her baby boy.
While the original felt deeply personal, laced with keys and and shimmering cymbals, VCC's remix gives the Beacon Hill singer's beautiful spoken-word poetry a nice synth amplification. When the melody transitions to a strong string accompaniment, Moni's bridge becomes even more momentous:
I need you more than anyone else/You are the reason I'm safe from myself/You've lifted me to heaven's peak/Now I know God
The Moni track is their last leak before the full VCC Remix album drops in February, but as Clipse's Hell Hath No Fury is one of Wisner's favorite hip-hop albums, and he's been in "remix overload" due to withdrawals stemming from two weeks of missed studio time, he's dropped an awesomely upbeat take on the classic "What Happened To That Boy."
