Is Soundgarden Really Reunited, or Just Back Open for Business?

Soundgarden: Band, business, or both?
In this week's paper I tell the story--which I've told 100 times before--about having to miss Soundgarden's Mercer Arena shows in 1996 due to a high-school band concert. It wouldn't have been so bad if the band hadn't called it a day shortly thereafter. Turns out I'm not completely screwed. With the band now kinda reunited, last week Soundgarden announced the release of its first-ever live album.

Live on I5, due March 22, pulls performances from the band's 1996 West Coast tour, and includes recordings of "Head Down," "Nothing to Say," "Search and Destroy," and "Black Hole Sun," from their shows at Mercer Arena. The full set list is after the jump.

Now comes word that Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has lined up an acoustic solo tour, dubbed the "Songbook" tour, to hit the Moore May 1. Excuse me for asking the obvious, but what happened to the Soundgarden reunion?

It's beginning to look like the "reunion," which has resulted in one major show (Lollapalooza) and two warm-up dates (Chicago's Vic Theater, Seattle's Showbox), is nothing more than a way to help sell a repackaged hits album and introduce the band to younger audiences. But are Cornell, Matt Cameron, Ben Shepherd, and Kim Thayil a band, or just business partners? If they're "reunited," then why is Cornell going on another solo tour before hitting the road with Soundgarden?

It's been a year since Cornell announced the return of the Soundtable, and every day the band remains idle, the "reunion" sounds more and more like a publicity stunt.
