Bikini Kill/Le Tigre's Kathleen Hanna appeared (with Beastie Boy husband Adam Horovitz) at Joe's Pub in NYC last week as part of the "Our Hit Parade" concert series. Our Hit Parade is a monthly series that has "superstars perform the top 10 pop songs," and while Bikini Kill never had a top-10 pop song, Hanna was closely associated with one of the best and most memorable in pop-music history.
Hanna recounted the age-old story of one night in 1990 in her old hometown of Olympia, when she and her fellow "angry young feminist" friend, Kurt Cobain, got drunk on Canadian Club, vandalized a fake abortion clinic, and Hanna scrawled on Cobain's apartment wall with a Sharpie before passing out. The drunken scrawl, of course, would result in Cobain's most famous composition.
"I was like, 'How the fuck is he going to use "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" as a lyric?,' " Hanna recalls. She goes on to perform a short section of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with a dramatic piano accompaniment. Ah, warm, fuzzy memories. Perfect for the holidays.
In this clip, Hanna also performs Bikini Kill's "Rebel Girl." Also, some parts of this video are NSFW, due to some of Hanna's accompanying visuals. You'll see.
