Did you know Nirvana has a Facebook? And whoever runs it posted this video this morning of the pre-Grohl Nirvana playing "About a Girl" at Bogart's in Long Beach in 1990. Says Nirvana's Facebook:
Rare footage from 1990 - Nirvana at Bogart's, if you were lucky enough to be there, you were probably 1 out of some 250 people. Great small venue.
The sound quality's pretty great, even for 1990. And the same YouTube channel also posted another seasonally appropriate video today of Nirvana ringing in 1994 in Oakland.
In the above clip, from New Year's Eve 1993, Nirvana plays the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena in support of In Utero, and although their words are fuzzy, we've been provided with a transcript of their banter:
Cobain - "I guess we'll count down the New Year now, ready?"
Novoselic - "So we have to do the countdown."
Cobain - "Three minutes! I have to stall for three minutes? Two?"
Novoselic - "Why did ... why did you flip me off?"
Cobain - "Let's drop down to Times Square."
Grohl - "I can do a drum solo! OK here it goes, ready?"
Novoselic - "Let me tune up."
[Grohl starts a drum solo]
Cobain - "Ten, nine, eight, seven, sex, five, four, three twoo, one! Ladies and Gentlemen Pauly Shore! Happy New Year!"
Grohl - "Hey, it's just like a Grateful Dead show, alright! Have a Gerry Christmas and a happy new Wear! I met Eddie Van Halen last night, he was drunk as shit! Hey Bobcat, come give me a hug, give me a hug!"
