"Get Schooled" Campaign to Help Kids Graduate Doesn't End With Tour Stop at Franklin High

You've all heard the ominous statistics: Every 26 seconds a kid drops out of high school, 70% of eighth graders don't read at grade level, one-third of all U.S. students fail to graduate high school, most low-income college students never finish. So to combat the issue, artists like Ludacris, Keri Hilson, John Legend and Pharell started the Get Schooled Tour, bringing artists across like to help with the motivation piece of the puzzle.

As a part of that tour, Grammy-winning emcee Common and MTV personality Sway dropped by the south end's Franklin High School a few weeks back for a rally to present a "Step Up" challenge. But the local artists involved in the event aren't letting it rest there--Barry Williams, aka DJ B-Mello (a graduate of Oak Harbor High School on Whidbey Island) and Chris Colornia, aka emcee Logics (currently enrolled at Green River Community College) are staying involved with the organization. And you can too, through the organization's opportunities to donate, volunteer, or create mentorships. Hit the jump for more clips of the Hit the jump for more clips of the day to get you motivated--including some of Franklin's own poets and the school's principal Dr. Jennifer Wiley.
