Feed His Ego: Sol Drops a New Single in the Wake of His Hype Machine Success

And in case you didn't know, the Hype Machine isn't some sort of corporate publicity factory--it's an NY-based music blog aggregator, and the people who frequent it recently took a real shining to Seattle's own Sol and his song "So Damn High" off recent EP Dear Friends, Vol. II. From his site (on which said EP and his new single satirizing the self-importance rampant in hip-hop, "Feed My Ego," are available for free):
Perhaps his surprise #1 ranking above the likes of Kanye West, Kings of Leon, & Deadmou5 on the popular music site Hype Machine last month has already gotten to Sol's head... I mean damn, he's even writing this press release in the 3rd person!
Though Macklemore's 2005 track "Ego" (from The Language Of My World) immediately comes to mind, the Sol cut is significantly less self-disparaging--but not any less introspective. Sometimes satire is the perfect way to get out what you need to say, and his moments of honesty are telling: "Fuck it, I'm the fuckin' dopest / Yeah I said it even though it isn't true / Because in this game, just a big brain won't do." I've been warning you, but I'll say it again: prepare yourself for dude's forthcoming sophomore record, because it's about to be a head-turner.
