So Damien Jurado and Richard Swift were hanging out a couple weeks ago, right? And Damien turns to Richard and he's like, "Oh hey, you doing anything this weekend?" And Richard's like, "Naw, not really, bro. Why?" So Damien's all like, "I dunno, I kinda just wanted to record some covers or something. Like nine of them." And Richard says, "Yeah man, I'm down. Let's do a Kraftwerk song and a John Denver song and make this epiiiicccc!"
Or at least that's how I like to imagine it. I guess I like to imagine Richard Swift as the ultimate bro, however unlikely.
In any case, Damien Jurado and Richard Swift actually did track a nine-song cover album together last weekend and released it online yesterday in seemingly spur-of-the-moment fashion. It takes songs from Yes, Chubby Checker, the theatrical production Oh! Calcutta! and others and rehashes them into jukebox-era, low-flying Americana fare, all tracked with a 4-track recorder to give it that hazy retro warmth. It's remarkably unified and clever for such a wide-spanning collection, not quite like what either songwriter does on his own but not wholly surprising either.
