In Case There Was Any Question, Grizzly Bear Wrote That Song Specifically For the WA State Lotto Commercial, Not An Upcoming Album

I know, I know, the lyrics for Grizzly Bear's song they lent to the above Washington State Lotto ad should have given it away immediately:

"Dreaming of something more/My thoughts began to soar/And these are days I'm ready to sail away/It could happen on a lucky day."

But there was some question when the commercial was released about whether this was an unreleased single, or if it had been written specifically for the commercial.

I was in the office of Cole & Weber United, the local ad agency that produced the ad for Lotto. Pete Anderson, C&W's director of integrated production, told me that Grizzly Bear was suggested to the agency by the ad's director, Patrick Daughters, who had just finished the music video for the Grizzly Bear cut "Two Weeks."

According to Anderson, Daughters showed bandmembers the spot and asked them if they wanted to score it, and the Brooklyn kids said yes.

"They wrote it for the spot," Anderson says. "If you do a really good spot then musicians will tend to be like, 'yeah, I want to be a part of that.' Where others, sometimes it's just a paycheck to 'em. You gotta have one or the other: a really cool spot, or some money."

Lotto brought both.
