Vampire Weekend/Beach House Ticket Giveaway: And The Winner Is...

Vampire+Weekend.jpg
I can't get over those shorts.
Beach House is one of my favorite bands. Vampire Weekend, not so much. Yesterday I asked you all to email me one good, compelling reason for why I should stop hating on those preppy, pastel-wearing New Yorkers - the most convincing answer winning a pair of tickets to the VW/BH show at Marymoor Park in August.

I got a lot of interesting emails. A couple (honest) people didn't play the game fairly and said they would leave the show right after Beach House played. One of you told me to stop hating on Vampire Weekend "to free up more time to hate on their ridiculous clothes of course!" (accompanied by a link to this as evidence). One tragic soul told me that maybe I should spend my energy doing something "more productive" like "reading a book," eavesdropping on other people's conversations, or "walk[ing] to the nearest coffee shop and indulg[ing] in Seattle's finest" (Seattle's finest what, she didn't say). And one classy guy even told me he "doesn't give a damn about the band and will only go for free to make fun of hipsters and hit on their girls."

Amusing stuff, but whether I like Vampire Weekend or not, I do like a good display of loyalty, and I still want an actual fan to win these tickets. In the end, it came down to three fans who helpfully thought to give me specific examples. Click through to hear who won and what convinced me.

In one corner, I had S.B. , who wrote: "Because they do a really good version of Rancid's "Ruby SoHo." Also at least they have a unique sound and aren't a cookie cutter wanna-be sound alike type band that there are FAR too many of."

Then I had K.C., who wrote: "'I Think UR a Contra' is a smashing pop/R&B song that works really well in a mix with Aaliyah, Dirty Projectors, and MIA, and shows that this band can experiment and have potential to grow beyond their afro-pop, Paul Simon-lite tendencies."

And finally, A.C. wrote: '"Giving Up the Gun' is my favorite song right now. It's an exercise in a fusion of electro-bass and the use of the glockenspiel. So fun."

S., K., and A., I listened to all of your songs. And this is what I came up with:

--"Giving Up The Gun" - is that a Jonas brother in the video?

--"I Think UR a Contra" - Yeah, it's pretty, but kind of a snooze.

--"Ruby Soho" - Catchy beat... subdued, not-annoying vocals... bouncy chorus... you know what? I can get down with this.

S.B., I liked your recommendation. You also gave me this fun fact: "Their keyboard player is Batman (Rostam Batmanglij)." What? That's awesome! You are the winner!!

Thanks to all for playing! Until next time...
