Ugly Casanova is for Isaac Brock what the Postal Service was for Ben Gibbard. For the better part of decade, there's been speculation about whether the Modest Mouse frontman's side project would ever release a follow-up to Sharpen Your Teeth, the band's only album to date. Originally featuring members of Califone and the Black Heart Procession, Ugly Casanova showcased a stripped-down, calmer Brock; Sharpen Your Teeth, released in 2002 on Sub Pop, was more acoustic with less shouting than Modest Mouse.
News (finally) broke last month that Ugly Casanova was recording again; the band would contribute nine songs to the soundtrack for 180° South, an upcoming documentary. Although the soundtrack will be released June 22, there's been no preview of those songs yet--that is, until this week.
According to Pitchfork and I Guess I'm Floating, Brock debuted "Here's to Now," one of the soundtrack's songs, at the premiere of 180° South in Santa Monica earlier this week. If this song represents what Brock has been creating lately, I'd say it bodes well for the rest of Ugly Casanova's new material.
