Public Image Ltd + American Bandstand = 10:03 of Surreal TV

Public Image Ltd, fronted by fomer Sex Pistol John Lydon, plays Seattle tonight for the first time since 1992, taking the stage at Showbox at the Market on the fourth stop of a month-long, 24-date tour of the U.S. and Canada that kicked off last week in California with appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and at the Coachella Festival.

In another TV appearance nearly 30 years ago (May 17, 1980), the post-punk pioneers left an indelible impression on anyone tuning in to watch American Bandstand that Saturday afternoon, with performances of "Poptones" and "Careering" off Metal Box/Second Edition.

It was among the least commercial music ever played on network television, and Lydon's refusal to lip-synch and his bizarre interaction with the audience left normally unflappable host Dick Clark perplexed, as PiL turned the set into an alternate-universe version of AB and a dance party from hell.
