Like your favorite Nora Ephron flick, She & Him's Volume Two is a pleasant, predictable, occasionally funny, but also smart relationship drama, with M. Ward as the dour Harry to Zooey Deschanel's effervescent Sally. Per usual, Deschanel's airy prosaic vocals remind her audience that she's a part-time singer. But her unrefined talents as a vocalist and songwriter are also what makes Volume Two so endearing, like hearing the girl next door singing from her garden.

In a welcomed turn, Ward--who was relegated too often to crutch and musical director status on the pair's first record--is permitted to put his haunting vocals to better use here. Not unlike his Monsters of Folk colleague Jim James, Ward's unique delivery is stronger when it's not the centerpiece of a record. Like that Ephron flick of choice, Volume Two may not fetch a shelf of trophies, but for those with an affinity for some substance alongside your bubblegum, it's going to get plenty familiar with your iPod-equipped Yaris.
