If you've ever wondered to yourself, "How the hell did Death Cab for Cutie become so popular?" then you'll probably find this video hilarious. (If you're wondering what the hell Death Cab is up to these days, well, that makes two of us.)
Scott Lapatine and Joe Mande of Stereogum interviewed Ben Gibbard at SXSW, pretending--rather ridiculously--that they mistook him for Beth Gibbons, the lead singer of Portishead (who they call an "indie rock legend," but don't afford the same compliment for Gibbard). The interviewers play the situation totally straight: it actually seems like they have no idea who Gibbard is. There's a terrible attempt at covering Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" and even a joke about Anne Frank that comes off as a complete non sequitor.
The most awkward part of the video is that Gibbard seems to have little sense of humor about the situation. Either he's incredibly good at acting annoyed or this interview wasn't staged at all. It's especially weird at the end, when Gibbard says, "I had a lot of fun. You guys really seem to know what you're doing here," so sarcastically that I can't tell if he's serious or not.
