Zee Avi, like all truly talented 21st century singer-songwriters nowadays, was discovered on the internet: originally from Borneo, Avi studied fashion in London while recording original and cover songs on Youtube for her friends. It was her original diddy "No Christmas For Me" that garnered thousands of responses and record deals offers. Now, she's an artist on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records with her debut Bitter Heart, opened for Pete Yorn earlier this year at the Showbox, and now is headlining her own tour. She's 23, jazzy, unpretentious and refreshing, an online success story you can stand behind.
Opening for her is Seattle-based People Eating People/Nouela Johnston (check out her song "Supernatural Help" here) who should provide a nice compliment: both women have lovely voices and smart lyrics, and if I'm not mistaken, they're both Asian/Pacific Islander. Count it.
The show is $10 in advance and doors open at 8 PM. After the jump, check out the original Youtube video for "No Christmas For Me."
