This is the first in a regular series of Monday morning REVERB posts based upon my obsession with the wide range of places where music and film intersect. We're leaving the parameters deliberately broad: music documentaries, biopics, musicals, soundtracks and scores will all be addressed. In today's case, it's the placement of a song in a film with the purposes of advancing the storyline. In Hal Hartley's 1992 film, Simple Men, the core characters know little about each other and have found themselves thrown together in a small town with time to kill and wide swaths of mistrust between them. An impromptu dance party to Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing" is apparently the only way to bridge the awkwardness. Complete video clip after the jump...
