The Raveonettes, In and Out of Control: I had a conversation with Rocket Queen columnist Hannah Levin yesterday about how I'm a softie for good pop music, and how pop music's gotta be GREAT to grab her attention. It's true, I'm a sucker for strong hooks and melodies I can whistle, which is why I'm stuck on The Raveonettes at the moment. As I said in this week's short list, it would have taken Phil Spector an orchestra in his days outside of prison to create what electronic Danes Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo have accomplished here. (The Raveonettes play Neumos on Friday night.)

Beck + Some of His Picks: Talk about melody. Mr. Hansen has written some of the best -- at least for my money -- over the last 10+ years. "Nobody's Fault But My Own," "Summer Girl," and "Hot Wax," are go-to favorites depending on my mood and the time of year. I cruised over to his site this morning to see what was new in Record Club, his series of re-making classic records. What I found was his latest mix tape. "No. 14: These Are Not Fall Colors" is a gorgeous batch of pop music, including John Martyn, Nick Drake, and other comfort foods. Listen for yourself:
