Revisiting Jem Cohen's Elliot Smith Film

I don't know if it's because Seattle Sound editor Mark Baumgarten recently turned me on to his heartbreakingly beautiful cover of Big Star's "13" (arguably the most romantic song ever committed to tape), the fact that I've re-watched one particular sequence from The Royal Tenenbaums too many times, or because my personal life in the last month has been a tad trying, but Elliot Smith has been on my mind a great deal lately. I really wish someone would do a full-length documentary on the man, but Jem Cohen's 11-minute short film about him is still a beautiful reminder of what an arrestingly intimate and compelling performer he was:
