Color Me Impressed by Seattle's Collective Love for the 'Mats

All you have to do is post one Replacements lyric as your status update, and you learn a little something--and not just that the vast majority of your peer group are 'Mats fans. When I wrote "Jesus rides besides me; never buys any smokes" (from "I Can't Hardly Wait) on my page last night, I woke up to lots of loving reciprocal quotes and this tidbit from Northwest Recording Academy exec director Ben London:

"Bill Sullivan ('Mat's tour manager) told me that Westerberg used to always ask him when they were driving on tour if he had any smokes even though he knew he did not smoke. He thought the line was about him."

Sounds plausible enough. I'm in the midst of moving, so my music is even more scattered about than usual, but clearly I need to track down my copy of this record as soon as possible. I've always thought the "Tim Version" of that particular song on that collection was superior to the original, horn-flecked version.

And though this is becoming a frightfully over-used point of entry for music blogging, it's worth noting that it's one helluva sunny day song. I think it's a given that I will have to listen to either Summerteeth by Wilco or Van Halen I today as well.
