As you may already know, the Cumulus Post-Rock Festival takes place Friday at Chop Suey, Saturday at King Cobra and Sunday at the Vera Project. I recommend a 3-day pass, as there are great bands playing this line-up (Hypatia Lake is one of them, but Earth is also playing and so are all of the folks listed below) and it will cost you a mere $20, which is a bargain for all three shows.
Hypatia Lake headlines at King Cobra Saturday night (Beast,
Please Be Still, Deelay Ceelay, The Luna Moth and Unlearn open; I'll be
posting more mp3s from those and other CF bands up until the festival) and Hypatia Lake has been kind enough to let me post an mp3 here from their latest record, Angels and Demons, Space and Time. It's called "Her Tears Are The Footsteps of Angels," and it is the first track from what is essentially the latest album in a series of albums that whimsically documents the lives of the fictional citizens of a fictional town. It's an engaging record, both musically and conceptually, and shares common ground with shoegaze bands without falling into the common trap shoegaze bands often stumble into-- that is, being totally fucking boring. Rather, they've discovered new frontiers of ambient psychedelia. You should also know that the album was recorded by Scott Colburn, who has lent his talents to, oh, just some little bands like Animal Collective and The Arcade Fire.
