Palin Feels Wilson Sisters' Sharp Teeth

Seattle-raised rockers Ann and Nancy Wilson (a.k.a. Heart) don't take kindly to Republicans using their 1977 radio classic tune "Barracuda" at campaign rallies featuring Sarah "Barracuda" Palin. The GOP apparently had been using the song to promote Alaska governor Palin's image among the tough white woman demo. It's not enough to be a wolf-shooting, caribou-skinning hockey mom; the potential VP needs to tap into that crucial sector of the electorate that treasures its '70s moments of Top 40 joy, cruising in the T-Top Camaro, feathered hair in the breeze, singing along to the song. (Which I totally and un-ironically love, BTW.)

And how do the lyrics go? Republicans take heed:

You're lying so low in the weeds, I bet you're gonna ambush me...

This in response from Heart's official band Web site:

"Rock Group Heart Condemn The Use of The Song Barracuda at The Republican Convention. Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart have informed the McCain/Palin Campaign that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to not use one of Heart's classic songs "Barracuda," as the congratulatory theme for Sarah Palin.

The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission. 'We have asked the Republican campaign not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored.'"

But, hey, I'm sure the whole catalog of old Ted Nugent tunes is still available for use.

And, finally, let's note that Heart will be appearing in an awesome triple bill with Cheap Trick and Journey next Friday, Sept. 19 at the White River Amphitheatre (40601 Auburn-Enumclaw Rd., 360-825-6200, tickets $27.50-$125, show at 7 p.m.). I'm guessing the Wilsons, smart, strong women both, who are never shy about speaking their minds, may have a few choice words to say about the current campaign. And candidates.
