I got free tickets to Boz Scaggs last night at the zoo. Rad, I thought. Boz Scaggs sang the sensational "Lido Shuffle", "Lowdown", and that sappy ballad from Urban Cowboy. Plus his name's Boz Scaggs. He's a cool old cat, right? Half-right. On the one hand, he had a righteous white cowboy hat on. On the other hand, with the exception of the aforementioned ditties, his tracks were straight-up, coma-inducing smooth jazz. In fact, I think I can now say definitely that Boz Scaggs founded smooth jazz, however inadvertently. But it should come as no surprise, really. I mean, this is a guy who was backed by Toto for an album called Silk Degrees, and is huge in Japan, just like Christopher Cross. The warning signs were there; I should have known better. Chris-Cross, take me away:
