Blaze & Townes: Snowing on Raton

A couple Mondays ago, Aja came into the office telling me she'd been turned on to Blaze Foley over the weekend. Blaze was a singer-songwriter from Texas who was shot to death in 1989. The dude slept on friends' couches, or under pool tables in bars. He wore a duct tape suit. He was fairly unknown, but wrote songs that were covered by Merle Haggard ("If I Could Only Fly"), Lyle Lovett ("Election Day") and John Prine ("Clay Pigeons") His records are pretty hard to find, but I did manage to stumble across this amazing YouTube clip of Blaze and Townes singing one of my favorite Townes songs, "Snowing on Raton" (which Robert Earl Keen would also later do a sublime version of). Their version here is beautiful...you can almost smell their collective whiskey breath.
