Pimp C, one half of the Port Arthur, Texas-based rap duo UGK, was found dead early Tuesday at the West Hollywood hotel he was staying in, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. The cause of death is still pending.
I had a dream that I'd see UGK perform live. I actually only had one chance, soon after Pimp C, who had been incarcerated for much of my four year stay in Houston, was released from prison. I was on my way to Club Blue in Houston, where Pimp C and longtime partner Bun B were set to make their comeback performance, when I got a call from a friend and fellow writer that the super-packed venue wasn't gonna let anyone else in, press pass or not. Six months later, I moved to Seattle, never once seeing UGK. Even after the release of this summer's Underground Kingz, I had hope that they'd make it out west to perform together. I mean, if Seattle loves Devin the Dude enough to bring him out a couple times a year, then why not UGK? It seemed destined to become reality.
Sadly, Pimp C's life was taken far too prematurely, only 23 months after being granted his civil and creative freedom. Rest in Peace, Pimp C. We know you're Big Pimpin' in the Sky.
