For those not familiar with David Allan Coe, please, please, please add Heartworn Highways to your Netflix cue. It's a beautiful, rambling snapshot of performers like Townes Van Sandt, Steve Earl, Guy Clark, Charlie Daniels and more in their much younger days, including a Mr.DAC at the helm of his own tour semi-truck (?), manning the CB radio like the rhinstone cowboy that he was back in that day. He's got a few more decades under his belt, but is still roaming the tour circuit, and tonight brings his country (and more recently) metal hybrid to El Corazon. Mr. Barr recalls his first experience with the man in this week's Short List. . .
The first time I saw David Allan Coe it was in a field outside Oil City, Pennsylvania. And while seeing a countrified biker sideshow nut like Coe is awesome in its own right, his fans were just as compelling. I watched as a drunk kid carrying a case of Busch fell over on his face and passed out, only to have a couple bikers walk by, nudge him with their steel-toes, and steal his beer. I watched as a large, bare-chested man slumped in a chaise lounge, allowed his granddaughters (presumably) to spray shaken beer-foam all over his furry girth. And in an event that scarred me, a true motorcycle mama, trying to get the attention of her man, lifted her shirt to reveal the largest most frightening set of naked boobs I have ever laid eyes on. I’ve never been the same since. Redneck Girlfriend, Bob Wayne & the Outlaw Carnies and Dragstrip Riot open.
Here's what he looks like today, performing "When I Was a Young Man". Please note the duo-strand be-dazzled beard.
