Soul for your Hump Day!

And now, some soul for your Hump Day...

Today's Gold (meaning old) album is this 1972 self-titled gem from the Spinners. From Detroit, they ironically had no luck on Motown, but got famous for their Philly soul sound in the '70s. I found this LP for a buck at this summer's Shipwreck Fest (a citywide yard sale) in Anacortes. It has all the hits: "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love?," "Ghetto Child," "One of a Kind Love Affair." I enjoy throwing this platter on while pre-funking and curling my hair on a Friday night- it gets me in the mood to go out. You can laugh, but the reason their name caught my eye while rummaging through the stacks is that I remembered it from Kanye & Twista's very educational "Slow Jamz:"

"Come with me and sip on some regular champagne
You aint know Twista can work it like the Whispers
Hit the stop light, get into some Isaac
The rims still moving so I'm bumpin little Spinners"

My Silver album of the day is the absolutely amazing 100 Days 100 Nights, out yesterday from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. I highly recommend running, not walking, to the store to snatch this up. You should know that the Dap-Kings have recently collaborated with Lily Allen, Kanye, and Amy Winehouse, but Sharon is the real star...at last year's Bumbershoot, she/they came on after Jamie Lidell and blew all memory of his set to smithereens. She was a dancing machine, sexing up an audience member who got onstage, coming with wiseass wisdom in songs like "Be Easy." At 10 songs in 33 minutes, 100 Days is way too short, BUT it comes with an hour-long mix of the Daptone Records catalog, called Binky Griptite's GhettoFunkPowerHour. It's the best thing since sliced bread, and Soul Sides.
