Better Than:
Watching Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny sober.

Kyle Gass is a man of the people. Especially if they are hot chicks who want him to sign guitars. Which he did before going backstage to get into the clothes of his alter-ego Klip Calhoun, rhythm guitar, vocals, and flute (?) in Trainwreck. Along with Darryl Lee (yes, that Lee) Donald, Trainwreck put on a hell of a show.

K-Pop and the Coalition of the Willing started the show. K-Pop has one of those faces that I think I should know from TV sitcoms or Comedy Central specials, but I just can't place it. He did a great impersonation of Jim Morrison, if Morrison didn't take himself so seriously. More than one person in crowd speculated whether it was an act or if he really was as drunk as he pretended to be.

The band was tight and somehow manages to put up with K-Pop's onstage buffoonery and still play like pros. I'm sure they are in on the joke, and that makes it better.

Trainwreck, on the other hand, is a band we know is something of a joke, but comes off as a really good cover band with great original material. Songs like "Tim Blankenship" show a song-writing skill you wouldn't think possible from a joke band. Covers included "Footloose," "We're an American Band," "East Bound and Down," (a perfect pick for the group's "countrified" persona), and "Flashdance (What a Feeling)." Bassist Boy Johnny took over the vocals for the latter tune, belting it out with all the heart of someone who always sings the same song during karaoke, but five times better.

The most popular "cover song" Trainwreck performed was "Lee," the Tenacious D ditty about their best friend Lee. Trainwreck is nothing if not fully aware of everything they do. Having the man who plays the character the song is based on singing it as a different character in a totally different band approaches comic genius. The best part is that the members of Trainwreck never let on that they know how funny these things are.

Personal Bias: Some of my friends will want to kick my ass for saying this, but I'd almost rather listen to Trainwreck than Tenacious D. I think Trainwreck has more potential to be taken seriously and a well of versatility yet to be explored.
Random Detail: KG met a few fans before the show, including a woman who asked to have her guitar signed and a man who wanted a picture to send back to his buddies in Iraq.  The man was on leave and heading back to the war soon. Seeing Trainwreck was how he spent his leave.
