Man, there's a lot of really good shows happening Tuesday night -- Melt Banana and Lesbian at Chop Suey, Two Gallants at the Showbox, the Album Leaf, Under Byen, and Arthur & Yu at Neumo's.... If you're feeling like something on the Southern rock/metal tip (and hey, who isn't?) then you might be down for Maylene and the Sons of Disaster over at El Corazon. Fronted by scream-'til-you-puke vocalist Dallas Taylor (who was allegedly kicked out of his prior band, Christian metalcore outfit Underoath, for not being quite Christian enough), the six-piece Maylene cranks out the kind of gritty, southern-fried, pit-baiting riffage that fans of Superjoint Ritual or Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society would love to beat the shit out of each other to (it sounds a lot tougher than these guys look in the above photo). As for the group's name, it's inspired by notorious '20s criminal Ma Barker and her gang, which consisted of her four sons. "What has always struck me about the Ma Barker story is how much it symbolizes the idea of 'what goes around, comes around.' Divine justice is unavoidable," says Taylor. "In these songs we speak as though we were [the Barker sons], telling any who would listen that a life lived unjustly will meet divine justice on the other side." Guess he's still a little Christian after all. Anyway, that's your rawk alert for Tuesday night.
